Bach Cantata Listener's Guide

Der Himmel dacht auf Anhalts Ruhm und Glück (Heaven thought of Anhalt's glory and fortune)

Cantata 66a

  • Serenata for the birthday of Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Köthen, 1718

The music for this birthday serenade is lost but since the work was later parodied in BWV 66 a certain amount of it can be reconstructed. BWV 66a/1 corresponds to BWV 66/2, BWV 66a/2 corresponds to BWV 66/3, BWV 66a/3 corresponds to BWV 66/4, BWV 66a/4 corresponds to BWV 66/5 and BWV 66a/8 corresponds to BWV 66/1. For more details, see the critical commentary to NBA I/35.
